As a Dental Health Advisor at NHS Direct Wales I have a varied and challenging role. I use my knowledge and experience to give dental advice to our callers, this includes:-

  • deciding what care is most appropriate
  • assessing callers symptoms
  • reassuring callers if they have any worries
  • always offering support

The main role of a dental health advisor is to assess people’s symptoms , each call is different which makes our role interesting and challenging. The caller could be suffering from a number of different issues which include Trauma, dental pain or even finding a dentist to register with. We sometimes need to make callers aware of different services that they can access in Wales or any other areas in the UK.

Our dental role is not to diagnose over the phone but to assess and give them safe and appropriate advice based on their needs at that time. Also we are able to signpost our callers to other health services such as GP’s, Community Pharmacists and A & E.

We have a wide range of resources we use to help us give information and advice, including high quality websites, and books. We can also use dental directories to let us know of dental services that are near to people’s homes.

The Dental Line is available Monday to Friday between 8am to 10pm, and weekends from 7am to 10pm, after these times there will always be a Nurse available who will be able to take the call and signpost to the relevant services.

It is important that we ensure the caller that there is someone they can talk to about their concerns or enquires and this gives me great job satisfaction, as I am able to help members of the public with their dental health problems.
